Not Noise: I don't call what I do noise because I do not consider it noise. I think the term "noise" is being thrown around with far too much reckless abandon these days, as well as the term "Experimental". My problem with the term "noise" is that is vague and negative. Yes I understand that all things in the world have positives and negatives, but I would rather my music stand for something positive and productive than something destructive. Some of you may be thinking that I'm some new age hippie, well if trying to improve the space we live in some way by making nice music makes me a hippie, then I guess I'm a hippie. Also, language is incredibly powerful. If you call it noise, you are basically devaluing what you are doing. /p> I speak from veteran experience in the "noise" scene. In 1996 while living in Miami, I started playing with The Laundry Room Squelchers, one of the oldest, and longest running "noise" bands in the world. If anything truly is noise, it is LRS. I played with them off and on up until 2003. Sound is incredibly powerful, and I learned this very much with LRS. The things we evoked in people most often psychotic anger and depression or other times near riots. The sounds we made brought out forces in everybody were dark and scary. If you've ever been to Churchill's at 3am in little Haiti, you'll know exactly what I am talking about. Or if you've been to I.N.C. (the international noise conference) you may have seen acts that involve some things that could even scar somebody for life, some even involving extreme and horrifying acts of self mutilation. Eventually the shock value of this type of thing wears off, and you just end up with allot of very unhappy and disturbed people. What's good about that? In what way has this bettered anything at all? Noise is also vague. When somebody says they are a noise band, it makes me think of when Bush says we've got to fight the war on Terror. Noise could be anything, it might even be something good. But as soon as you call it noise, it pretty much can't be any longer, because you already removed all the value from it with your language. You have devalued it, and so has everyone who has watched it, because to them it is just another meaningless wasted night of noise. Obviously, if you've listened to my music you know that I don't play top 40, and some of it is even somewhat abrasive. My most abrasive album after I took on this philosophy was "cell phone tower" This was a conceptual piece intended on making a statement about electro-magnetic pollution, but not meaningless noise. Before that my two other somewhat abrasive releases. "Fireant" and "Lost" were created before I came to this conclusion of responsibility as an artist. Most people's argument to me on this philosophy is that they claim that Art is merely a reflection of society. I agree with this, but I also think that society is a reflection of Art. Both are mirrors, they reflect one another. What happens when you point a mirror at another mirror? You have an endless hole of mirrors. You have to change the reflection on one end if you do not like what you see on the other. I know damn sure society isn't going to change, so I think my responsibility as an artist is to change what is being cast into the endless mirror from my end and inspire positive change in the other. Society inspires Art, and Art inspires Society. Look at any science fiction novel that was written in the late 1800s or early 1900s and you'll instantly see this is true. I do not think everything should be watered down easy listening gook, but I really think the meaning and intension behind a work of art should be carefully considered, as well as its affect upon its listers/viewers/participants. What's my problem with calling my music experimental? Well, my problem is, is that its not experimental. I'm not experimenting. I know exactly what I'm doing. Experimenting is doing something and not knowing of the result. If a drummer gets on stage and tries to play bag pipes for the first time, then THAT is experimental. We are eons past experimenting with music. So what do I call it? I call it vibrations. 5/5/08 5/4/08 Hi all. I'm just posting a little note to you all to
let you know what I've been up to.
I went to Denver and Boulder last month to Play
the Communikey festival of arts, and to visit my good friend Derrick Hart. The
festival was really cool, but the best thing about the trip was Red Rocks
Amphitheater, which is just awesome. If you're ever in Denver, you should check
it out. Derrick and I went there the day after the show and to some other really
cool mountainous spots.
All of the biking in Boulder was really
inspiring. Here's a place that is mountainous and snows 60 percent of the year,
and there were more people riding around on bicycles than I have ever seen in
any one concentrated area in my life. It made me want to ride so bad, I went for
a long ride the first day I got back. This really got me thinking how so often
when I'm out on my bike I'm the only one riding around. Since I live in pretty
much the most ideal place in the country to ride year round, I really think you
fellow Floridians gotta get your act together and quit getting in the car
so much. Ride your bike! If you don't have one, then buy one and ride it! So
many people say its impossible here, which it flat out just isn't. Florida's a
great place to ride.
OK, that’s enough of me preaching, I'll get to the
actual news.
one bit of such news is I am showing my
photography at ArtPool here in St. Pete,
go down and support the place and maybe if you're feeling really nice,
you'll buy one of my photos :)
Also, speaking of ArtPool, the Lunarflower
Collective will be performing at their art party bash this month on May
17th. It will be a night of art, film, fashion and really cool and friendly
people. The Lunarflower Collective is a group of Ambient composers and artists
here in the Tampa/St. Pete which was co-founded by me and Christopher Costabile as a
counterpart to the Lunarflower Netlabel-
Which by the way has allot of great new
releases right now. LF-009 Band Reject, by
Dimitri Barnias from Greece, is the most experimental work to date on LFN
and its quite the ambient/computer music gem This release is also the first that
is available in mp3, ogg, wav and flac formats. LF-008 Old
shows, by Derrick Hart is a brilliant release from my good friend Derrick
hart. I can't recommend this album enough, Derrick is an amazing song writer
with a stellar voice. Fans of Neil Young and Jonny Cash will find a lot to love
about Mr. Hart, as well as just about anyone with a heart of their own, hehe
(sorry). LF-007 Yemaja,
by yours truly is a serene snorkeling trip though semi-tropical waters in
the nude through sharkless waters.
Of course all of this music is free, so what are
you waiting for?
3/13/08 I've been a busy beaver working on new music, traveling, and organizing the collective as well as the Lunar Flower Netlabel. Speaking of which, we posted two new releases. One is my long over due release of Yemaja, and the other is a new ep by Deepspace. There's also a new video posted in the releases section of Numazu playing in Denver last month. I still have footage of Able, Ten & Tracer and Josh23 from the same show that I will import to my computer soon (sorry its taken so long Josh). I'll be sure to get it over to the good folk at Rope Swing Cites to use at their disposal. By the way, that is where you can download the full Numazu LP, which is quite awesome I might add. Some of you may remember a while back that I said I was going to release 3 consecutive albums, well I did, sorta. I actually have finished more than three, but I didn't want to hog lunar flower with all of my releases, so I've been holding on to them. Thankfully I found a great new home for some of my more experimental work, and that home is Timetheory. Thats where you'll find "Elementals" as well as another new one called "Cell Phone Tower" which will be released there soon. "Cell Phone Tower" is a conceptual piece based on my theory of electro-magnetic pollution having a direct effect on our thoughts and living environment. The DVD for Lunar Flower (the collective) should be done some time soon, and once it is I'll be posting the youtube evidence. In other new, my photography may be in a new gallery in St. Pete in the coming months, more on that later. bye for now, and thanks for reading! 2.8.08 New live album "Elementals" is out now! "Elementals" was recorded with a microphone, casiotone, and puredata with my jlooper patch, all live with no overdubs or prerecorded samples. check it out on the "c_eative w_rks" page. 1/23/08 Wow, its been way too long since I updated my news section. Anyway, allot of stuff is going on. Lunar Flower is doing great, and we've had over 1000 hits in our first month online! Much in part to our great artists like Deepspace, Christopher Costabile, not to mention the stellar writing of Chris and Jason. Manasota is also Available on Lunar Flower now for free download. And comming soon we will be releasing a great new album by Swedish ambient composer M. Persson, as well as my new album "Yemaja" Which by the way, if you can't wait, is available already right here on my newly redesigned "c_eative w_rks" page. Now not only can you download my new album for free, you can also get all of my other releases as well. You can also just click the stream links and listen to the albums in your favorite media player without dowloading the whole album, just a small playlist file. Besides the Lunar Flower Netlabel, we are also starting an artist's collective involving ambient and experimental music as well as multimedia such as film and other types of art, right here in the Tampa Bay area. So if you are interested in this idea, please send me a message. We are planning to do performances and installations in local and eventually national galleries and museums. Last but not least, I'm playing a show in Denver on Febuary 3rd with Derrick Hart's experimental project Numazu whose album I appear on as well as some other fantastic musicians. The show is at Larimer Lounge and is with Ten and Tracer, whom I think is awesome. So I'm pretty excited about this show. We have some crazy plans, so if you're in the denver area, be sure to come to the Larimer Lounge on the 3rd of Febuary and support some great art. January is already almost over, sheesh. 1/6/08 Happy New Year! Sorry for the long time no update, I've been really busy with Lunar Flower, but it has really been worth the work. We are getting ready to release our third LP "Amomalies" by Christopher Costibile, probably by tomorrow. So be sure to check out Lunar Flower and subscribe to our podcast. Also, soon I will be posting a back catalog in LFN that will include Manisota, Part Of It, as well as some other goodies. j |
